Admission

As part of the recruitment of future police officers, the Maison des Langues designs and administers the French exam.

The French exam is divided into two parts:

You are subjected to a basic test. The certificate of successful completion of this basic test is mandatory in order to be able to submit an application to the police. In order to access the recruitment process, you must also meet all of the following mandatory hiring criteria:

  • Nationality: Swiss or residence permit giving access to Swiss nationality (procedures must be made with the Naturalization Department). ATTENTION: Applicants under 25 years of age must obtain Swiss nationality AND meet the conditions for compulsory service before starting their initial training. For candidates over 25 years of age, Swiss naturalization must take place before the end of their initial training.
  • Age limit for admission: from 20 to 35 years (at the end of their initial training, the candidate must be 20 years old and must not be over 35 years old).
  • Compulsory service: having completed his recruit/civil service school or being subject to the exemption tax from the obligation to serve (at the beginning of initial training).
  • Driving licence: category B (car) and A1 (motorcycle - without the 45 km/h restriction) at the beginning of the initial training. Applicants holding a foreign driving licence must be in category A before the start of the training.
  • Completed, federally recognized post-compulsory training: CFC or equivalent.
  • No criminal record, no police record, no prosecution or deeds of lack of property.
  • Good visual acuity.
  • Godd health and physical condition

Basic test

The basic test is composed of a structural part of the language

  • Multiple choice questionnaire (3 or 4 choices)
  • Terms to be corrected (agreements, conjugation, pronouns, etc.)
  • Deficient text to be completed under dictation

and a written comprehension part:

  • Reading a text of about 500 words on a company subject and questionnaire that checks the comprehension of the text.

Results

In case of success, the Maison des Langues sends you a certificate of success to be attached to your application form, and sends a copy of your results to the Police Training Centre.

The certificate is valid for 3 years.

If you fail, you can strengthen yourself and come back to another session.

Additional test

The second part of the French exam takes place at the end of the recruitment process, once all the recruitment steps have been successfully completed.

Successful completion of this additional test is essential to qualify for police training.

Content of the additional test:

  • Reading an article, viewing a film excerpt and producing 3 texts.
  1. summary of the article,
  2. narration based on the film extract,
  3. taking a well-argued position.

Results

In case of success, the Maison des Langues sends you a certificate of success to be attached to your application form, and sends a copy of your results to the Police Training Centre, which is valid for 3 years; in case of failure, you can strengthen yourself and represent yourself at another session.

Informations

You will be directly convened by the Police Training Centre.

NB: in the event of failure, it is possible to retake an examination, the time limit being at least 4 months between two examinations.

Information for candidates holding a French certificate acquired before 2017

The French certificate obtained before 2017 (old formula) responds favourably to the basic and complementary tests. It is valid for 3 years from the date of submission of the application.

French exam to become a Public Safety Assignor or Assistant (PSA)

2 possible options

  • Passing a mock exam and corrections - duration 2 hours - CHF 190
  • Preparation for the basic exam - flexible 6-hour package CHF 550 (including mock exam) registration fee CHF 150 - Overtime CHF 95

Our School prepares you for the basic test which is run by the UNIGE. The certificate of success of this basic test is mandatory in order to be able to submit an ASP application.

If you meet all the prerequisites and possess the required qualities, you can apply to become a public security assistant to support the Geneva Cantonal Police and the Cantonal Detention Office.
